The requirements of the new international standard ISO 37120 open up the possibility to compare the quality of urban life

555567[1]In May 2014 the International Standardization (ISO) Organization has published the new voluntary international standard ISO 37120:2014 “Stable community development – Indicators for municipal services according to quality of life.”
Since its publication there is an opportunity appear to simplify the work of the city authorities, politicians, businessmen, architects and real estate developers to improve the quality of local communities life for stable development and prosperity of the city.

Currently, 53% of the world population lives in cities, and this figure is expected to rise to 70% by 2050. Cities are cultural and economic center, and today produce 70% of world Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Investments in them may be a priority for many governments of different countries, under condition of stability and efficiency. Exactly the standard ISO 37120:2014 can help make the right decision.

Indicators included in the ISO 37120:2014 give the possibility of city authorities to evaluate results of their activity and measure progress in improving the quality of life and stable development. Consistent approach of the standard will allow to compare success of cities unstintingly. In the future, such comparison can be used to share best practices.

In accordance of estimation local authorities can plan activities to improve the management and service supply, to orientate for the best international practice, to prove the financial and investment plans, to conduce openness and transparency in management.

The standard ISO 37120:2014 covers the following sectors of city life: the economy, education, energy, environment, finance, fire safety and emergency response, management, health, leisure, hospitality, solid-waste recycling, telecommunications and innovation, transport, urban planning, waste water, water supply and sanitary.

The standard can be used to evaluate any communities, municipality or local authorities, apart from the size and location or level of development. ISO 37120:2014 is the first international ISO standard for the evaluation of cities.
