ISO 45001: Workplace safety in ISO package or OHSAS 18001 acquisition as an international standard

In July 2014 the project committee ISO / PC 283, introduced the draft standard ISO 45001. Official Publication is planned for late 2016.

The draft standard ISO 45001 is based on the well known OHSAS 18001 (BSI developed in 1999 as a specification in 2007 was revised in the status of the standard). Despite the fact that the OH & S used throughout the world, it is not officially recognized international standard.

ISO 45001 general goal will be remaining the same. In content and in meaning this standard is practically similar to OHSAS 18001: 2007. However, the ISO 45001 has new the structure and form that fully takes into account new rules development of management system standards in accordance to Annex SL «ISO / IEC Directives, Part 1, Consolidated ISO Supplement, 2014″.

ISO / CD 45001draft standard has more distinct focus on:
✔ organization «context» – the new chapter has been introduced;
✔ senior management active role – the new chapter has been introduced;
✔ not just control of risks which reduce occupational safety management system effectiveness, but also its improvement of management capabilities.

Also, the company has to take security care of its contractors and suppliers, and also to take into account how, for example, its activity can influence on local communities.
These requirements are much wider comparing to BS OHSAS 18001: 2007. It means that one shouldn`t focus all attention to hygiene and safety, but to take into account that fact, that company cannot make contracts, if there is a high risk of incidents which can lead to health or life loss not of just its employees, but also contractors, as well as people who lives nearby.
